Saturday Brunch Featuring Freetown Collective
Monday Mar 02, 2020
Monday Mar 02, 2020
New Calypso! A modernization of a too familiar groove and “melanin vibe” that Freetown Collective’s Muhammad Muwakil muses over on this electric Saturday Brunch episode, basking in the after-glow of a successful 2020 Carnival season. The group’s debut Carnival EP entitled ‘YAGO’, released on the ‘other’ side of the soca threshold (a brazen Ash Wednesday morning), pushes the musical artform into the beauty of a honeyed Caribbean vibration. From the euphoric dusk and dawn praise song of ‘Feel the Love’ to the smile-inducing sweetness of ‘Big Man Ting’, all the way down to the sure-footed invocations in ‘We Bad’, Muwakil points towards a glorious imagination for Trinbago music, for the love of its own people and surely then the rest of the world.

Saturday Brunch Featuring Mistah Shak

Tuesday Nov 26, 2019
Hands up! Don’t let them drop! Keep them up! Unforgettable instructions from his debut performance of ‘Rogue’ in 2010 at Skinner Park, with what Mistah Shak describes as a moment inside the ‘enigmatic energy’ of that ‘big yard’ where the true gatekeepers of kaiso decide who the real champions are. Sharing on his cross-generational connections, earlier hesitations to enter the ring, and his infusion of the craft with messages that challenge power and structure, Shak approaches his expression seriously from creation all the way to presentation. Discussing mentorship, collaboration and a hope towards continued expansion for his fusion work of kasioca, Mistah Shak muses on the duty of the artist to approach the music with sobriety and intention.

Take the culture and make it your own. Revive the old to make something new and beautiful.
Walking faithfully in the legacy of his father Edwin Yearwood, Remy ‘RemBunction’ shares on his work as a ‘culture jammer’, being the creative genius behind countless fascinating collaborations with calypso greats such as Lord Invader, Scrunter, Cro Cro and The Mighty Sparrow. Beyond his artistic tendency towards pushing the limits of Trinbagonian music, in this episode of Saturday Brunch Remy also shares his experience on maintaining authenticity as an all-round creative, actor and animator.

Saturday Brunch featuring Robin Foster
Tuesday Sep 24, 2019
Tuesday Sep 24, 2019
“Recording the History of Trinidad and Tobago”- not exactly what you’d think of as the role of a sound technician, but if sound is a road map through Trinbago time and space, it means that being able to journey through it so fluently, makes one a historian. In this episode of Saturday Brunch we get a look behind the scenes of sound engineering mastery with veteran Robin Foster. Joking about how much of a Sound Jumbie he becomes when he drops into his work, the giant from among other giants discusses how external musical trends such as opera, jazz and soul have influenced tonalities in calypso music, and he expertly interprets the new developments of soca music, in a shrunken world of instant access to global music material.

I've been listening to this mix on repeat for about a week now. I think it's one of my favourite mixes. People wonder what Trinidad and Tobago sounds like, some say we are soca land and they think that is all...here's a very small taste of us...soca and all.

Saturday Brunch Featuring John Skweird and Bridgette Wilson
Wednesday Aug 14, 2019
Wednesday Aug 14, 2019
In this bonus interview episode of the Saturday Brunch Podcast, R&B vocalist John Skweird, chats about his body of work, and the creative communities that he emerged out of; including Youth Pulse choir, the stomping ground of several other brilliant artists in the late 1990s. Speaking honestly on finding his place in the local music scene and the challenges therein, the St. Barbs native considers experimentation with calypso, his love for hip hop music and the social impact of the 1990 attempted coup on his community environment.
Eagerly returning as principal to the dance school she was trained at, Bridgette Wilson of the Caribbean School of Dance speaks on her work as a choreographer, her involvement in shaping the movement magic of The Lost Tribe Carnival band and her musings as educator transforming young lives. Both artists describe their relationship to music during childhood and how it has framed both their memory and realities.
